Ex-Napalm Death vocalist Lee Dorrian formed underground UK metal mainstays Cathedral in 1990, favoring Black Sabbath grind over his former bands thrash-metal, though the vocals were just as demented and unintelligible. A large part of their career was spent recording for Earache Records, debuting with the landmark 1991 doom metal classic Forest of Equilibrium. 2002's The VIIth Coming is the band's appropriately titled seventh full-length and first release following their departure from the Earache fold. Dorrian's distinctive vocal style started to shift into something more accessible here yet the Black Sabbath riffs remain in full force. From stellar opener "Phoenix Rising," through to standouts like "Aphrodite's Winter," "The Empty Mirror," "Nocturnal Fist" and "Congregation of Sorcerers," the apocalyptic themed The VIIth Coming is as compelling an album as anything in the Cathedral catalog.
